JUMBO SQUID ARTISANAL FLEET FROM PERU REGISTERS MORE THAN 1000 SMALL BOATS FOR INTERNATIONAL WATERS
Complying with the installation of a satellite device have permitted more boats dedicated to the giant squid (Dosidicus gigas) capture to be registered and to participate in the catches of the cephalopod beyond the 200 miles, where they would compete with other countries´ specialized ships.
These boats are now in the list of the ORGANIZACION REGIONAL DE ORDENAMIENTO PESQUERO DEL PACIFICO SUR (OROP- PS) or SOUTH PACIFIC REGIONAL FISHERIES MANAGEMENT ORGANIZATION (SPRFMO) in English. These boats could now go beyond the Economic Exclusive Zone of Peru chasing the elusive giant squid , where they would find a difficult competence from China, Korea and other countries boats that are better built for the task : only China´s 650 registered ships sum 600,000 MT of holds capacity, whereas Peru (1,043 boats) sum only 25,000 MT.
This step has been taken thanks to SONAPESCAL (National Society of Artisanal Fisheries) and CALAMASUR ( Sustainable management committee for Giant Squid- South Pacific).
