ASC advances new standards to strengthen aquaculture sustainability

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) entered 2026 with significant developments aimed at strengthening sustainability across global aquaculture. The organization is moving forward with the implementation of its new feed standard, its new ASC Farm Standard, and, since March, a refreshed visual identity designed to improve recognition of ASC certification in international markets.

The new ASC Farm Standard seeks to create a more unified framework across the different aquaculture species covered by ASC. Previously, species-specific standards had evolved separately, creating differences in how responsible aquaculture was assessed depending on the species.

Through this new approach, ASC aims to provide greater consistency, efficiency, and clarity for producers, buyers, and consumers. The standard also places stronger emphasis on animal welfare, human rights, and reducing environmental impact.

One of ASC’s main challenges is to maintain a global standard that is strict enough to drive meaningful improvements, while remaining practical enough for industry adoption.

With its new standards and updated logo, ASC reinforces its position as a key certification body supporting more responsible, transparent, and sustainable aquaculture, aligned with the growing environmental and social expectations of the global seafood sector.
